According to Northwest coast Native tradition, the earth is a maternal symbol; the earth, the animals and humanity are connected. This mask, carved in 1990, depicts Mother Earth in manner of the traditional masks which portray characters such as Komokwa, the Lord of the Ocean. Traditional Kwakwak’awakw masks portrayed characters from the ancient stories, as well as people and events from the time of the artist.
